When choosing a candle, fragrance and design are only part of the story. The wax matters too. Soy wax is a popular choice for scented container candles because it is plant-based, works beautifully in vessels and lends itself to a smooth, considered candle experience.

For LILELE Studio scented container candles, I use soy wax together with carefully selected fragrance oils. Here are seven reasons why I enjoy working with it.

1. Soy wax is plant-based

Soy wax is made from soybean oil. Unlike paraffin, which is derived from petroleum refining, soy is a renewable agricultural material.

That does not mean one type of wax is automatically “healthy”, but the origin of the material is an important consideration for many people when choosing a candle.

2. It works beautifully in scented candles

Soy wax is well suited to fragrance oils designed for candle making. In a properly developed candle, fragrance is released gradually as the wax warms and a melt pool forms.

For LILELE candles, I test the balance of wax, wick and fragrance because all three influence how the candle burns and how the scent performs.

3. Soy wax has a relatively low melting point

Soy wax generally melts at a lower temperature than many other candle waxes, which is one reason it is so widely used for container candles.

Burn time, however, depends on much more than wax type. Wick size, vessel diameter, fragrance load and candle care all play a part.

4. A soft, elegant appearance

I also love the visual character of soy wax. Its soft, creamy finish works beautifully with the LILELE aesthetic and allows the vessel, handmade details and fragrance to remain the focus.

5. A considered approach to materials

When choosing a candle, I recommend looking beyond the words “soy wax”. Consider the whole product: the wax, wick, fragrance and how clearly the maker explains the materials used.

In LILELE scented candles, I use cotton wicks and phthalate-free fragrance oils, following the relevant supplier IFRA guidance for their use in candles.

6. Every LILELE candle is handmade in Riga

LILELE is not mass production. I make the candles myself, from selecting materials and fragrances to pouring and adding the final details. For many designs, I also hand-cast the gypsum vessels and create the decorative wax elements.

This means that small, natural variations can occur from one candle to another – part of the character of handmade work.

7. A candle can become personal

Selected LILELE candles can be personalised with your own message and, depending on the design, a fragrance of your choice. It turns a beautiful object into a thoughtful gift for a birthday, a thank-you or simply a moment when you want to say, “I’m thinking of you.”

How should you burn a soy wax candle?

  • Trim the wick to approximately 5–6 mm before each burn.
  • On the first burn, allow the wax surface to melt evenly without exceeding the maximum burn time stated for the candle.
  • Place the candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from draughts.
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.
